Life Skills

- Stepping into and pulling up and down pull-ups and pants
What She's Working On
Cleaning Up After Meals
- We are teaching Shannon an after-meals routine using "backwards chaining"
- "Backwards Chaining": Use Full Physical Prompts (FPP) for all steps except the target step and previously mastered steps
- Reinforce at the end only if Shannon is at the same or better prompt level than the previous day for the target step, and has independently performed all previously mastered steps
- DO NOT TALK DURING THE PROCEDURE
- Steps: start teaching the last step (while using FPP for all steps leading up to the target step); once the last step is mastered (performed independently for three consecutive days), begin teaching the next step up
- Put silverware in sink
- Go back to table
- Put plate in sink
- Open the dishwasher
- Put silverware in dishwasher
- Put plate in dishwasher
- Close dishwasher
- Get paper towel off counter
- Turn on sink
- Wet paper towel
- Turn off sink
- Go to table
- Wipe table
- Walk to garbage
- Open garbage
- Throw away towel
- Close garbage
- Turn on sink TARGET
- Rub hands under water MASTERED
- Turn off sink MASTERED
- Pick up paper towel MASTERED
- Open garbage MASTERED
- Put towel in garbage MASTERED
- Close garbage MASTERED
- If Shannon does all previously mastered steps and the target step at the same prompt level or better as the day before, provide an edible reinforcer
- Data: take data on what level prompt Shannon needed for the target step and previously mastered steps

Before Bath Routine
- We are also teaching Shannon a before bath routine using "backwards chaining" (see After Meal routine for description and rules)
- Steps:
- Get lotion from bathroom
- Put lotion on dresser
- Get brush from bathroom
- Put brush on dresser
- Open pajama drawer
- Get pajamas out of drawer
- Put pajamas on bed
- Close pajama drawer
- Get two diapers off shelf TARGET
- Put diapers on bed MASTERED
- Data: see data instructions for after meal routine
Brushing Teeth
- We are not going to target this as a full task analysis (TA); we are just working on Shannon tolerating our brushing her teeth
- Procedure:
- Start by telling Shannon, "We are going to brush your teeth. I will brush each row, then you can have a break!"
- Brush each row (top; bottom) for a total of 15 seconds (5 on the right, 5 in the middle, 5 on the left); restart your count to 15 if she is noncompliant (bites down on the toothbrush, pushes it away or closes her mouth).
- Have the DVD player on during this process (make sure she is interested in the show so tha it is acting as a reinforcer); if she is noncompliant, pause the DVD until she allows you to finish the quadrant
- After brushing the whole row, give Shannon a small break (reinforcer)
- Continue process with the other row
- Data: take plus/minus data on each trial
- plus: she tolerated your brushing the whole row with no problem
- minus: if she was noncompliant and you had to restart your count
- At the end, calculate the percentage of successful trials
- Do molars "freestyle" afterwards; we are experimenting this month, so feel free to play around and share what has been effective
Playing in Room Program
- Purpose: we want to teach Shannon that when she is in her room, she can occupy herself by playing with toys, hanging out in her bed, or eventually watching TV. Because Shannon wakes up so early, we want her to be able to eventually independently occupy herself until everyone else wakes up.
- Current Goal: Shannon will independently play with three toys after getting out of bed
- Procedure:
- Lay out 3 toys in Shannon's room, and get them set up so she can play with them
- Have Shannon sit/lay in her bed and tell her, "I'm going to go, if you get bored you can play with your toys."
- Leave the room, then watch her through the peep hole. When Shannon gets up from her bed, see if she goes to the toys independently. If she does not, go in and prompt her to start playing with the first toy. If she does go to the toy independently, go in and give her an edible reinforcer.
- From then on, watch from outside the room and go in to prompt her as needed to get through the 3 consecutive toys.
- Reinforce each initiation of starting a toy and upon completing all 3 toys.
- Data: take data on the prompt level needed (FPP; PPP; Independent) to do each step
Other Life Skills Goals
- Eating
- Shannon eats pretty independently, but she will still occasionally try to use her hands or eat too fast
- Shannon needs help holding her plate/bowl with her right hand while eating to help steady it
- Drinking out of open cups
- Shannon is pretty adept at this as long as there is only a little liquid in the cup (so that she doesn't drink too much) and you take the cup away when she is done (so she doesn't drop it)
